This Life 04:40
This Life Written by Curtis Stigers, Dave Kushner, Bob Thiele Jr. and Kurt Sutter Ride into this world, all alone God takes your soul you’re on your own The crow flies straight, in a perfect line On the devils back until you die This life is short Baby that’s a fact Better live it right Cos you ain’t coming back Gotta raise some hell Before they put you down Gotta live this life …. You gotta look this world in the eye Gotta live this life Until you die You gotta have soul Nothing less Cos when it’s business time It’s Life or death The King is dead My life goes on Don’t lose your head When the deal goes down Better keep your eyes On the road ahead Gotta live this life ….

Driving All The Way To L.A. Music & Lyrics: Marcus Lazarus Cherry was a dancer Joey was a chancer Driving all the way to L.A. They were high on their emotions Drinking different potions And living life from day to day Beg, steal or borrow Forget about tomorrow Feel as if they’re losing their mind Juke Joint renegades Honky Tonk escapades Leaving all their troubles behind They wanted to rock They wanted to roll They wanted to live and die and free their soul Nobody would get in their way Driving all the way to L.A. Joey squeezed the trigger The other guy was bigger Ran straight out of there double time Cherry took the money Changed her name to Honey Said it was victimless crime The lady was a biker Honey didn’t like her Wiped her out and stole her beret The roadblock wasn’t easy The cops were kinda sleazy But Honey wasted them anyway They wanted to rock They wanted to roll They wanted to live and die and free their soul Nobody would get in their way Driving all the way to L.A. See the light The stars are shining bright The gate is open wide Just have to step inside Ease the pain You will be saved again You will be born again You will be glorious They wanted to rock They wanted to roll They wanted to live and die and free their soul Nobody would get in their way Driving all the way to L.A.

What Can't Speak Can't Lie Music & Lyrics by Marcus Lazarus On the road I turned into a town The summer days Had long since passed away Headed for the Honky Tonk The neon flashed so bright I was thinking to myself About the fight we had last night I could see it in your eyes You were talking ‘bout the way you felt While you were thinking ‘bout another guy Never had a feeling like The love you would deny But what can’t speak can’t lie To ease the pain I lost myself again Another drink And time just slipped away By morning I was feeling bad I had nowhere to run I was looking at my life Down the barrel of a gun I could see it in your eyes You were talking ‘bout the way you felt While you were thinking ‘bout another guy Never had a feeling like The love you would deny But what can’t speak can’t lie

Black Hand Over The Sun (The Ballad of Nat Turner) Music & Lyrics - Marcus Lazarus} In a cotton field in Virginia Where the sun was beating down They were singing hallelujah For the freedom they had found They killed the master, they killed the kin Oh Lord have mercy for the trouble they was in There’s a black hand over the sun And you’re gonna die Nat Turner, now he was a man He gathered up his people there They had their fill of oppression They had their fill of dark despair They killed the masters, they killed the kin Oh Lord have mercy for the trouble they was in There’s a black hand over the sun And you’re all gonna die He said Oh Lord, won’t you take me home Oh Lord, won’t you guide us My divine chaperone Now they called out all the militia And after 2 long days They had rounded up his brave coalition Now there was hell to pay They hung them all in unison 200 wooden crosses in Jerusalem There’s a black hand over the sun And you’re gonna die He said Oh Lord, won’t you take me home Oh Lord, won’t you guide us My divine chaperone There’s a black hand over the sun And you’re gonna die There’s a black hand over the sun You’re all gonna die

Knock Me Out 03:40
Knock Me Out Music and Lyrics - Marcus Lazarus You live in a bottle You come to answer all of my prayers You chase me round the house Around the bend and right up the stairs I love the way you do it Come on baby, knock me out You taste just like an angel I want to kiss you all night long I never read the papers They only say you done me wrong Come on pretty baby You gonna knock me out Knock me out Knock me out Knock me out I don’t know how you do it But you better get back to it I wake up in the morning And you’re sitting in my favourite chair I don’t remember nothing We must have had a party right there I love the way you do it Come on baby, knock me out
6.
Bullshit Blues Music & Lyrics - Marcus Lazarus You take the money when the writings on the wall You speak your mind, but there’s nothing there at all You show your colours with a brand new pair of shoes You took a gamble but you know you’re gonna lose Down town criminals are emptying the bank Leaving people homeless, no clean water in the tank But that’s OK, cos you’re gonna take a hit We don’t need your bullshit All this suffering is coming to a head A revolution while you’re sleeping in your bed We’ve seen your houses with the marble stairway Better look behind you when you’re slicing up the fairway Down town criminals are pushing up the price Leaving people hungry when you roll your weighted dice But that’s OK, cos you’re gonna take a hit We don’t need your bullshit

What You Got (Is What I Need) {Music & Lyrics - Marcus Lazarus What you got, is what I need I’m gonna love you, yes indeed Every night and every day I’m gonna love you in every way Sometimes I get so ashamed I only got myself to blame Sometimes, I can’t stop looking at you What you said, made me smile Your sweet love makes it all worthwhile On your lips, and in your eyes I can see the road to paradise Sometimes I get so alone But you pick me up and take me home Sometimes, I can’t stop loving you Let me feel the love now baby Open up your heart now baby Let me inside your heart What you got, is what I need I’m gonna love you, yes indeed Every night and every day I’m gonna love you in every way Sometimes I get so alone But you pick me up and take me home Sometimes, I can’t stop loving you Can’t stop, Can’t stop Can’t stop, can’t stop Can’t stop loving you

Caught In The Middle Music & Lyrics - Marcus Lazarus When you get lonely Talk to me Talk to me When you don’t get what you needed Talk to me Just talk to me When you’re tired of the fight And nothing’s going right Sometimes we are caught in the middle And we don’t know where to turn Sometimes we are caught in the middle And you just need a friend When they try to put you down Run to me Run to me When they just don’t understand Run to me Just run to me When you tried all you can But you just need a helping hand Oh, you can buy yourself some time Share the weight that’s on your mind Just let me know before it gets too late I won’t hesitate Sometimes we are caught in the middle Sometimes we are caught in the middle Sometimes we are caught in the middle And you just need a friend

Keep My Flame Alight Marcus Lazarus Always tried to be a better man Always tried to treat you right Tried so hard to be a good man Always came home to you most every night When I’m dead and gone, baby How you gonna keep my flame alight? Never meant to hurt you Never meant to cause you misery You know I never meant to hurt you Always tried to let you be When I’m six feet under, baby How you will remember me? I put food upon your table A roof right over your head I put money upon your table When I could have walked away instead You know I found out about your lying And it cut me to the bone Yeah you thought that I was blind You shoulda hung up that phone When I’m dead and gone baby You’re gonna be all on your own I put food upon your table A roof right over your head I put everything I had right there upon your table When I should have walked away instead Always tried to be a better man Always tried to treat you right Tried so hard to be a good man Always came home to you most every night When I’m dead and gone, baby How you gonna keep my flame alight?

Trying To Write A Love Song Music & Lyrics - Marcus Lazarus I’ve been trying to write a love song But I don’t know where to start Tried to find a way inside your head Find a way inside your cold, cold heart But all I get is an empty page Where the story should be told By and by I think you’ll find All the glisters ain’t necessarily gold There’s a colour in your rainbow I’ve never seen before I know the bell ain’t working That’s why I’ m knocking at your door I’m just looking for some answers To the questions I have sold By and by, I think you’ll find All that blisters ain’t necessarily cold

Turn Up The Heat Music & Lyrics - Marcus Lazarus Turn up the heat Turn up the heat Turn it up, turn it up Turn up the heat

about

Marcus is based in Watford, UK. The album was recorded out in Italy (Stabbiolo Music) with a mix of UK and Italian musicians, and covers a range of styles from Blues, Rock and Funk with a touch of Soul thrown in for good measure. “Stabbiolo" is Italian for Pig Sty which turned out to be an appropriate name after the debris left behind when we’d finished!

All songs except the title track This Life were written, arranged and produced by Marcus. Based on rough demos, we arrived at the studio to find an authentic Fender Rhodes and a Hammond with Leslie Cab in the studio so included those as much as possible throughout. It turned out that Alessandro (Studio Owner and Engineer) was not only an accomplished classical/jazz pianist himself but his wife Daria was also a multi-instrumentalist, and she happened to have a real Sitar - so that went on as well!

Most of the tracks were recorded separately for each musician but usually only in 1 take each. The rawness of some of the solos and vocals makes it feel like a ‘live’ album, and we only had 5 days to get 12 tracks done anyway, which we managed with careful planning and optimisation of the time available. Mixing took a couple of months as well as mastering, but the end result is simply staggering, all things considered.
