This song is based on the true story of a slave rebellion in the deep south of America. Nat Turner was working in the fields when there was a total eclipse of the sun. He saw it as a sign that a higher power had control of their fate, and declared it to be a 'black hand over the sun'. He and his fellow slaves turned on the plantation owners, killing them all. They moved on and escalated their rebellion against other local plantation owners, and their families. In those days, there were no police, so people formed their own protection, or militia, or posse. Nat Turner and all of his accomplices were rounded up after 2 days, and hanged in a town called Jerusalem, Virginia. But it didn't end there. The militia went on the hang another 200 slaves who had nothing to do with it.
